If you need a new roof and are looking to add a bit of style to your house, then there are a few different asphalt shingle options that you can choose from. Two of the more common high-quality choices include dimensional shingles and luxury shingles. Keep reading to learn a little bit more about these options before you ask your roofing contractor to install them.
Dimensional Shingles
Dimensional shingles get their name from the layered and textured appearance they provide. Unlike the single-layered three-tab varieties, the dimensional shingles have two layers of asphalt that are bonded together on a single shingle, giving the roof a more three-dimensional shape. Also, the shingles have smaller tabs with alternating shapes to give the appearance of cedar shake or tile roofing.
These shingles do look more appealing when they are installed, and they also offer double the protection of a traditional asphalt roof. And, the layering of the shingles keeps them protected from wind lifting issues. This can mean increased longevity in areas close to the water or located in hurricane wind regions.
The shingles come in many colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes for a unique and personalized look and since the shingles are heavier and layered, they can last for up to 40 years. While this is true, you can expect a cost that is about two times that of three-tab shingles. And, since the shingles weigh more, they can add some substantial weight to the roof structure during the winter. So, it is best to have your contractor conduct some weight calculations that include typical snow accumulations to ensure that this does not exceed load-bearing capacity.
Luxury Shingles
Luxury shingles are similar to dimensional varieties. However, they create a flatter surface on the roof and are meant to mimic the appearance of slate or tile. The shingles come in colors that further imitate the stone look and they also appear in slightly different tones to create shadowing, variety, and depth.
Luxury shingles are not layered, but they are quite thick, substantial, and heavy. This means they provide optimal protection like the dimensional shingles. And, they are uniquely suited to high wind areas by resisting lift with their weight.
The shingles can be shaped like tile or slate or you can pick from the unique shape options. Some shingles come in random shapes to create a natural appearance or you can opt for rounded, scooped, angled, or octagonal shapes. Since these shingles do create a distinctive look, ask your contractor for pictures of nearby homes that are installed with the various shingles so you have an easier time choosing the look that you like best.
