Eight Possibilities for the Ideal Commercial Facility Roof Material

Blog

One of the most important decisions you'll make when you need a commercial roof replacement done is what material to choose for your roof. It's important to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each material option, to choose the right one for your commercial roof.

The following are eight possibilities for the ideal commercial facility roof material.

Steel

If you're looking for a roofing material that is highly durable, galvanized steel might be the best option. Galvanized steel is ideal in many commercial roofing applications, where durability is one of the most important considerations.

Galvanized steel is durable, while also offering heat resistance. A zinc coating on a galvanized steel roof can help to prevent rust development. Galvanized steel offers the advantage of requiring minimal maintenance over the years.

At the same time, galvanized steel is a more expensive roofing material than some other options out there.

Aluminum

You might want to opt for aluminum if you're looking for a commercial roofing material that is durable, while also being wind and fire-resistant. Another advantage of aluminum is that it is known for wind resistance and environmental friendliness.

Generally, aluminum is a less expensive roofing material than galvanized steel.

Copper

Copper is one of the most expensive metal roofing material options available. However, it offers the advantage of an attractive appearance. It is also fairly durable when it comes to metal commercial roofing materials.

Modified bitumen

If you opt for a modified bitumen commercial roof, you won't have to worry too much about maintenance. The only maintenance your modified bitumen roof will require is periodic inspections and cleanings.

Modified bitumen is a fairly strong material when it comes to tensile strength. If your commercial roof needs to be flat and support foot traffic, a modified bitumen roof might be the best option.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

One of the main advantages of a PVC roof is that it is particularly lightweight. This type of roof is also resistant to damage from exposure to oils, and UV rays.

Built-up roofing

A built-up roof (BUR) is also sometimes known as a "tear and gravel" roof. This roof consists of fabric and asphalt. The top layer of a BUR roof is made from gravel and tar.

BUR is ideal in a situation where weather resistance is essential. These roofs offer sealed surfaces that are impenetrable to the elements.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

EPDM roofs have been around for decades. However, they have only recently become particularly popular for commercial structures.

An EPDM roof is a type of rubber roof. This type of roof offers impressive durability, and also stands up to the demands of constant UV ray exposure well.

Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO)

TPO roofing is a more recent development in the roofing industry. You might want to choose a TPO roof if you are looking for the durability and lightweight nature of PVC roofing, but want a more cost-effective option.
